There is no doubt.  There are some lovely day trips from Seville.  Ronda is beautiful but its narrow streets can barely handle all of the day trippers.  And then there is Carmona.  Charming, but so close to Seville that it also sees a lot of visitors. If you really want to experience a day trip from Seville off the beaten path, let me tell you a little secret: the Sierra de Aracena is where it is.

Linares de la Sierra , a Spanish town worthy of a Bollywood filming locatoon. Really!

Less traveled towns in Spain to fuel your wanderlust

Located in Huelva province, which most visitors to Spain have not even heard of, the Sierra de Aracena is a picturesque area full of small whitewashed towns (like the more fampus pueblos blancos).  Distance hikers love walking from town to town, but even if you do not have time to do that, this lesser traveled area can be reached on a (long) daytrip from Seville.

You will need a car.  And some patience for navigating precarious, curvy, narrow roads.  But you will be rewarded with a true way to see something different in Spain from Seville off the beaten path.

While these towns do not offer big name attractions like the Alcázar, they offer you a chance to get a glimpse into tiny town life in Spain.  Driving on the Huelva Province’s rural route HU8212, it is hard to forget how close to the Portuguese border you really are.  The limited radio stations in the area are shoddy signals from both Spain and Portugal.  Some of these towns do not have any sort of data, not even 3G.

You will be rewarded with miradores, empty castles, bull rings you can freely walk on to, delicious local food (the area’s jámon is some of the best in all of Spain), and even a much smaller, uncrowded mezquita with many similarities to Córdoba’s.

So are you ready to explore the Sierra de Aracena?  Great!  I have a brand new guide about it. a one day itinerary from Seville.  Colorful and full of original photos, my day trip itinerary explains how to get there, key sights in each town, and some cool pit stops along the way.  There is also a link to a Google map that can be downloaded, for step by step driving directions from Seville and back.
